Start With the Roof
When returning to your cottage after a season away, check for any damages that can occur to your roof after a harsher season of winter. Winter storms and wind can rip off roof tiles, and melting snow or ice can create leak issues. Ice buildup especially causes expansion between cracks and seeps under tiles.
If roof work and repair are not something you feel you can safely and correctly handle yourself, be sure to call a professional.
Inspect the Rest of the Property for Damage
Besides your roof, months away from the cottage can lead to other potential issues, especially during the winter season. Inspect your property’s grounds for issues such as foundation cracks, damaged screens, chimney blockages, the splintering of the deck, and broken windows. If your cottage is situated by water, such as a lake, consider checking the state of your dock and any boating equipment as well.
Check for Mould
Besides breakage, mould is a potentially dangerous form of damage that can occur to a cottage that has been left unattended for months on end. It is usually fairly easy to determine if a cottage has mould, as the stale smell will likely alert you the moment you enter the room. If you sense mould, be sure to open the windows to allow for clean, fresh air and check for the source of mould in your doorways, windowsills, bathrooms, and under any counters.
When mould is minimal, it is easy enough to remove with cleaners or gentle bleach/water mix. However, if you cannot trace the source of the mould, or it is in abundance, it is recommended you call a professional removal service.
Check for Pests
While you’re away from the cottage, sometimes new tenants can find their way into the uninhabited place. Critters such as mice, squirrels, bats, raccoons, and any number of insects can find their way into your home through even small openings.
Check for telltale signs such as shredded papers, fabrics, chewing surfaces, droppings, and more, and call a pest-removal service if you believe the situation cannot safely be controlled by yourself.
When leaving the cottage unattended for a season, always be sure to remove any food from the cottage to avoid potential animals seeking food. Ensure any cracks, holes, or openings are sealed as well.
