What To Do When Moving Into a New Home
We can easily get caught up in the semantics of moving our stuff in and out of our homes and arranging furniture. This is certainly something important, but don’t forget the security stuff!
1. Child/Pet Proof Your Home
If you have children or pets, take some time to make sure your home is safe. Your old home likely had all of these safety precautions in place – but your new home won’t. Before you start moving furniture and boxes and people into your home, take some time to walk through your new home and check for child and pet-proofing.
2. Deep Clean
When you first move into a home is the best time to do a deep clean. Ideally, you’ll want to do this before you start moving your things into your new home. You may not know who lived in your home before you, and now is the easiest time to start cleaning.
Focus on the bathrooms and kitchens. Alternatively, you might want to hire a professional cleaner to do a deep clean before you start moving in.
3. Locate the Fuse Box and Water Valve
Locating the water valve and fuse box isn’t as exciting as exploring your new home. However, knowing how to turn off the water or where to go if the electricity goes off is very important. This is something you might not think about – until you need to turn off the water at the mains.
Take some time to locate these key points before you start moving your furniture in.
4. Change the Locks
Another safety aspect of moving into a new house is changing the locks. Let’s be frank – you don’t know who lived in the house before you, and you don’t know who might have had a key. Copies of keys might have been made and handed out to neighbors, friends, and family – and just never taken back.
If you’re looking for a good locksmith, try CLK Locksmith Tools. They offer a variety of services, including but not limited to changing the locks in a new house.
5. Meet The Neighbors
Last but certainly not least, go around and meet your neighbors. Especially if you live alone, being on good terms with your neighbors can be an extra security measure. Your neighbors are more likely to keep an eye out for your house, and may even be willing to house sit when you go away.
The Bottom Line
Moving is stressful, make no mistake. However, with a bit of organization and preparation, moving day can go as smoothly as you could want.
